6.1 PRACTICAL/PROFESSIONAL TRAINING - II

RATIONALE

The objective of providing practical training in 5th and 6th Semester aims at:

1. Creating confidence in the students to work in world of work to develop practical skills pertaining to laboratory management and diagnostic skills in the field of Heamtology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Histopathology

2. Creating necessary awarness regarding use of various types of equipment, particularly sophisticated ones which are used in the field of medical technolgoy

3. Developing appreciation regarding size and scale of operations, environment and other related aspects like value of team working interpersonal relations and professional ethics in the field of medical technology

4. Developing necessary traits for starting small clinical laboratories as per requirements

SELECTION OF TRAINING PLACES

The institute offering diploma programme in Medical Laboratory Technology should establish contact/rapport by personal visit to following types of organisations:

  1. Medical Colleges

  2. Civil Hospitals at district headquarters

  3. Hospitals in private sector

  4. Well established clinical laboratories

Note:

1. The Principal of the institute where diploma programme in Medical Laboratory Technology is being offered, with the help of Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial Training/Directorates of Technical Education/Secretary, Technical Education may approach Director, Health Services/ Director, Medical Education/ Heads of above said Organisations and other competent related authorities to collaborate in offering structured and supervised practical training of students in above organisations. It will be worthwhile to sign a "Memorandum of Understanding" regarding the involvement of students in undergoing one year practical training

 2. The Principal of the institute may also approach regional Apprentice Adviser (Northern Region), Kanpur to provide training seats under apprentice-ship Act to the students

METHODOLOGY OF ORGANISING PRACTICAL TRAINING

Institute offering diploma programme in Medical Laboratory Technology may adopt following strategy for proper implementation of one year practical training:

 1. Prepare competency profile of students in all specialisations namely Heamotology/Biochemistry/Microbilogy/Histopathology

2. Efforts should be made to place each student for a period of one semester in Medical Colleges/institutions where facilities for Histopathology and Microbilogy exist. The next

semester can be utilised in well established clinical laboratories to practice Heamotology and Biochemistry. This will facilitate deviding students in two parts i.e. Part-I: Histopathology and Microbiology; Part-II: Heamotology and Biochemistry for easy placements of students in medical institutions

3. Each concerned teacher will be responsible for a set of students in respective speciality to plan, supervise and monitoring the progress of the student where placed in different organisation for practical training.

EVALUATION OF STUDENTS FOR PRACTICAL/PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

Each semester of practical training will have 800 marks. Out of which 400 marks will be awarded by internal/polytechnic faculty and 400 marks by the organisation where placed for practical/ professional training. The criteria for assessment will be as under:

Criteria Weightage

  1. Attendance/Punctuality 10 percent

  2. Proficiency in conducting laboratory tests 60 percent

  3. Practical note book 15 percent

  4. Initiative/responsibility exhibited 5 percent

  5. Interpersonal relations 5 percent

  6. Behaviour / attitude 5 percent
